Yard Sales

Yesterday, we had a yard sale. I didn't net a great deal of money by probably most standards, but I did get rid of a lot of unwanted household items and kids' clothing. Having a yard sale can be a lot of work, though. Trudging through your things with a keep/sale/toss mentality should be done at least once in a year. For us, having moved twice in the past 3-1/2 years (and the last time all by ourselves with a pre-schooler and baby in tow) we really got a feel for what we need and don't need. The first move was from a 4 bedroom house to a much smaller rental, minus all that extra storage space in the attic and basement. It became a matter of simple math... not everything we owned would fit in that rental house, even if we tried. So, we donated a great amount of less than useful wares to a local second hand shop. The point here is that if you haven't used it in 3 years, chances are you don't really need it.

We sold probably half of what we put out there and of what is left, we'll either donate it or in the case of the kids' clothes, try to see what Once Upon a Child will give us (if anything) and then donate from there. Our whole mentality was that whatever we put out there needs to ultimately leave; there's no saving it for the next yard sale.
Meanwhile, we felt really good earning extra cash for our castoffs, and since we priced our items rock bottom, most people went away with a smile on their face.
