Disclosure: General Mills, through MyBlogSpark, provided me with free cereal coupons as well as information highlighted in this blog post.
As parents, we want to feed our children the best possible nutrition. I'm not one to get up early to bake muffins, fry bacon and eggs or make waffles. I rely on boxed cereal mainly because it is quick and easy and generally nutritious. Sugar content, however, does concern me. I don't want to sugar up my kid and send him to school. Because of my sugar concerns, I do tend to shy away from some cereals. But recently General Mills announced that it would be cutting sugar levels in cereals that they market to the 12 and under crowd. These cereals would have their sugar grams to single digits per serving.
For me, breakfast is a big deal. I cannot imagine not having breakfast in the morning. Kids learn so much better with a good breakfast. Aside from the nutrition needed for brain power, cereal also has another benefit: It helps you have a healthier BMI. Obesity is rampant in our country - both in adults and in kids - and cereal may help keep weight down resulting in a healthier BMI. Read more about that here.
I believe this is true. I have always eaten cereal and in more recent years I have been eating a bowl of cereal just about every morning and have a healthy BMI. My hubby was never one to eat breakfast and once he started to eat breakfast in the morning he felt much better and his pants fit a little bit better too.
So be on the lookout for lower sugar in your child's favorite cereals. The new lower levels of sugar should be a welcome sight. Remember breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Grab a bowl and make a point of starting your day right with your children. Breakfast cereal and milk help ensure that both you and your child get the nutrients your bodies need.
