We play Scrabble in our house, but until this week, we only played it online. You see, my husband and I play against each other via a Facebook app. The kids, though... they were a bit jealous since they wanted to play too. When I received Hasbro's Scrabble Flash this week, let's just say the kids were drooling! The set up was a snap and in no time flat, the kids were making words.
My 6 year old spelling words. Is RAE a word? |
What Scrabble Flash can offer my 6 year old.
My little guy is a kindergartener who can read. He's learning patterns when it comes to words and Scrabble Flash can help him with this. He may not get the highest score, but if he gets T-R-A-S-H, that boy can spell hat, rat and sat. It's a game he can play on his own or with a little help from mom and dad. Plus, when we play with him, we can help him learn the meaning of a word too. I see it as a learning tool to help him get positive reinforcement when he does build a word. "TAR is a word?" --- It sure is buddy! It's so nice to see him sounding out the words he's making.
My daughter spelled "lay" and is ready to switch the "L" for a "D" to spell "day". |
What I see Hasbro's Scrabble Flash doing for my 9 year old.
She's not a good speller... yet! Admittedly, this is something that bugs me to a certain extent (former Spelling Bee champ at my school). She can build better words (longer than 3 letters that her brother can manage) and, again, when we play with her, we can help her build her vocabulary. One word she built today was ROE. We told her that roe was fish eggs (something she didn't know). To get the best score, it is best to logically move through words. Like the hat, rat, sat example above, you then move on to har, tar, etc. and keep rolling through until the timer runs out.
Mom and Dad don't mind playing either!
Both my husband and I have played the game. It only takes a few minutes to play, so we played a few games before dinner and while we were eating lunch. While it won't replace our Facebook Scrabble, it is a fun, family friendly game for Family Game Night!
About the game...
You line up the tiles so that they are touching to make words. The words that you make must be 3 letters long. The game comes with batteries already inside each of the five letter cubes and these cubes can be shut off manually or will shut themselves off after 3 minutes of inactivity. The game also comes with a handy, small black box with a lid for easy storage. Each game is different, so if I were to play a game and my daughter wanted to play right after me, she would not get the same letter combination.

***GIVEAWAY***
Hasbro has graciously allowed me to review Scrabble Flash and to provide a giveaway winner with their very own Scrabble Flash game! You must be 18 or older and live in the USA. This giveaway will run through March 31, 2011 at 11:59 PM Eastern, and the winner will be chosen on or about April 1, 2011. The winner will be chosen via Random.org and will have 48 hours to email me back with requested information. If winner does not do so within that time frame, I have to choose a different winner. Please read the entry options carefully.
Mandatory entry: This entry must be completed for extra entries to count. Leave me a comment telling me who you would give this game to if you were to win! Leave your email (or let me know that it's publicly available via your Blogger profile) so that I can reach you should you win.
Extra entries (because I know you really want to win Scrabble Flash!)... each action is worth 1 entry. Leave a separate comment for each action. If you already follow/like/are a friend, just leave me a comment letting me know.
- Share this contest with your Facebook Friends - please leave me a link if possible.
- Tweet this giveaway out to your Twitter followers. You can use: Enter to win Scrabble Flash, a great game to play on @FamilyGameNight at Making Ends Meet! Contest ends 3/31 #giveaway http://ow.ly/4dcFQ
- and, just for fun... leave me a comment telling me one word you can make from these letters (must be 3 letters long): S-H-A-P-E. Try not to use a word someone else has already posted!
Disclosure: Hasbro provided me with Scrabble Flash for the purposes of review. The game was provided to me at no cost; however, the opinions are 100% my own and/or are based upon my family's experience with this game. They have also graciously provided me with the opportunity to allow one of my lucky readers to win their own Scrabble Flash. The game will be shipped to winner by sponsor.
