One of the big things that I remember from childhood was playing Monopoly with my sisters, brother, and neighbor. We played one game so long we actually had to make more Monopoly money! That game took several weeks to finish, and we didn't know then that years hence that Monopoly would develop a game, Monopoly Electronic Banking Edition, that would make it so much easier to keep track of money for a game that took longer than an evening to finish!
Shown: Game as set up. My 10 year old volunteered to be the banker and did a great job. She had little problem running the banking unit. The instructions were easy to follow and she only needed help once figuring out how to process a transaction.
This updated version looks much like the old game that I remember. The values of the property have changed (inflation?) but overall, it's the same. One thing I did notice was that there were updated tokens to choose from. I was always a fan of the race car of old, but I think I could get used to the jet!
The inside of the box has a plastic formed case that has a place for everything. This is nice for me because I like my games to stay organized. I want things to stay put and not slide around and get mixed up.
Shown: Hotels and houses. My kids didn't get that far in this particular game. However, the banking unit stored their balance, right down to the dollar, for a future game. This is a great feature to have since some games take longer to play than others.
Features of the Monopoly Electronic Banking Edition that I liked
I didn't think I'd like the electronic aspect. Kids need to learn how to handle money. However, not fussing around with money did make the game seem to go faster. Another thing I liked was the auction rule - if you don't want to buy a property that you land on, the banker auctions off the property to the highest bidder. This also moves the game along faster. The instructions are super simple to follow and they even give suggestions for making games quicker.
I do wish the game actually came with the batteries needed. That's an extra plus that I always hope to find in products that I buy that require batteries. However, I've also found that if they do include batteries, they're usually not name brand, good batteries anyway. In this case, I had the two AAs that I needed, so I didn't need to make a special trip to the store for batteries. I will also note that if you plan to store the game long term, as in you don't play it often, always take batteries out of the banking unit to avoid any chance of corrosion of metal parts.
Buy it! Monopoly Electronic Banking Edition is available at a host of retailers and e-tailers for approximately $24.99. It's a game that would be great as a gift or to add to your family game night stash of games.
Win it! One lucky Making Ends Meet reader will win a Monopoly Electronic Banking Edition of their very own. Here's what you need to do to enter....
