Warehouse clubs are more fashionable in this Recession and if you don't belong to one, then perhaps it is worth consideration. I have belonged to Sam's, Costco and BJ's and am currently unattached. Convenience-wise, all are an hour's drive away... so no quick runs for me.
Most recently, we were members of BJ's. Why? Because the cost to join between Costco and BJ's was about the same, but BJ's had one advantage over Costco for me... they accept coupons! Their prices were basically the same, so it was a no brainer.
If you are thinking of joining a warehouse club, BJ's is offering a trial 60 day free membership. You have to activate it by 7/6/09 though. This is nice since if you opt for a one day pass, you pay an upcharge of 15% unless you join. But at least with a free trial period, you can gauge whether or not you want to keep coming in to shop.
Is a club membership worth it? Check out this AOL Smartmoney article that appeared on Walletpop. The article compares a grocery store, Sam's, BJ's and Costco on everyday items we all use such as milk, toilet paper, fruits and veggies. Some items were cheaper than the grocery store, others not. Like any good shopper, you need to know how to cherrypick.
