If you are ever in the position of either a) not having vision coverage or b) having insurance, but falling outside of their dictated time periods for getting things like glasses, take the time to research your discount options. I needed to replace my glasses in a hurry and begrudgingly did it through Lenscrafters, even though I knew it would cost me. As I expected, my insurance would not pay anything toward the exam or the glasses, but Lenscrafters does offer a discount for AAA members. So, I dug out my card and saved $16 on the exam and a bit over $100 on my glasses.
The Lenscrafters that I went to in Waldorf, MD was offering a 30% discount to everyone, which pretty much negated my AAA discount since I couldn't combine discounts. Still, it was better than paying full price considering I needed them now. I might have been able to do a little better, but I would have had to wait for them.
Who knew! Glasses was not anything that I would expect to get a AAA discount for. Hotel room, yes. Glasses, no. Good to know!
A few years ago I didn't have vision insurance and got offered a discount at a different eyewear provider when I balked at the price... I asked them for my prescription so I could fill it elsewhere and then I magically got offered a substantial discount to entice me to stay. It never hurts to ask what discounts are available and if there is anything they can do to earn your business.
