Did you just get your refund check? I'm sure it is no coincidence that many states are either now running or shortly will be running their Cash for Appliances programs. I know here in Virginia, we won't get more information until the program rolls out in April; but just across the river in Maryland, their Cash for Appliances program will be beginning in March. For more info on that, click this link from WBAL TV.
One thing that Maryland residents need to bear in mind is that if your local utility offers a rebate for buying Energy Star, you can double dip. At the mall in Waldorf, Maryland, the Sears had rebate forms for PEPCO. Other Maryland utilities who offer rebate offers are listed on Maryland's Energy website.
Read carefully because to snag the utility rebate, you have to make sure that you send your rebate to them in time and it could be a short period of time to do so. One I looked at required you to submit for the rebate within 30 days of purchase - kind of short notice if you order something and have to wait for it to come in.
The Cash for Appliances rebate is not retroactive, so if you are shopping around for more energy efficient appliances, you may want to wait until your program rolls out to get the most bang for your buck.
