My kids love syrup on their waffles and pancakes and so do I! I grew up in Pennsylvania where we had several small, local maple syrup companies that offered their products locally. I miss having the natural tasting syrup that I enjoyed at my grandparents house whenever I would stay with them growing up. So when Log Cabin said yes to a product review of Log Cabin All Natural syrup, I was really excited. It is hard to find natural maple syrup on the shelves of grocery stores these days!
How did Log Cabin's All Natural syrup taste?
Yummy! I made a quick meal of waffles for dinner last week and brought out the syrup for a complete family taste test. Here's how it stacked up:
Me: I loved it! It had a great flavor that wasn't too sugary. In addition, it is gluten free, which is great for me since I am allergic to wheat. It did remind me of the syrup I used to eat from small local companies. I am actually now actively searching out recipes that include maple syrup to see how it tastes in baked goods. (If you know of a fudge recipe that contains maple syrup, let me know!)
Hubby: He said it was OK. I think he was looking for a deeper maple flavor, based upon what he said. He did look at the side of the bottle and thought it could use a higher concentration of maple (it is 4%). Overall, he liked it better than the other brand sitting on the table.
Kids: These sugar addicts didn't like the Log Cabin All Natural near as much as the other brand (containing High Fructose Corn Syrup) on the dinner table. My youngest didn't seem to mind it as much, but my 9 year old said she didn't like it and refused it. The next time I make waffles, I'm going to hide the other bottle and then let her try the All Natural again. I really think it comes down to the other one tasting more sugary.
Attributes I liked about Log Cabin All Natural syrup
- No preservatives
- No artificial colors or flavors. I know exactly what is in it.
- Gluten free
- Pours easily and lid snaps on tightly.
- Price could be an issue. It retails at $4.99, though I intend to shop sales. However, even though it is more expensive than my normal syrup, I would be willing to pay more for it because I love the taste.
- Can't microwave it in the bottle, so warming syrup is an extra step. I would love to see this in a glass bottle so I could microwave it.
I liked the taste very much. I particularly liked the way it blended with my gluten free waffles because my gluten free cooking is not the best and most of the time my waffles and pancakes come out a bit on the dry side. I count on syrup to be able to make my waffles or pancakes taste good! I really thought the Log Cabin All Natural was a great complement to the waffles because it wasn't so overpowering you didn't taste the waffles at all.
