Family vacations are something that I think most of us adults remember from our childhood. It is an important time to relax together, play together and bond. This is ever important in this day and age since we are so plugged into our technology. What would my ideal great getaway in the U.S. be for my family? I want the Brady Bunch's trip to the Grand Canyon! If Mike and Carol Brady could haul six kids to the Grand Canyon, my two should be a dream!
To fully appreciate the Grand Canyon, I would need to get over some fears. I've flown once to Disney and back, but as other passengers on that plane would confide, I might have whined a bit at take off. I just told myself the whole flight down and back that the plane was a big Greyhound bus.
I'm also afraid of horses, so I'd need to find a way to ride the donkeys down to the bottom. I think I could manage that because it is important to show no fear to your kids.
Ultimately, I'd buck up and fly to Arizona and take in the awesome wonder of the huge chasm. I would opt for the guided tour since tour guides are very knowledgeable. You learn so much from them that you wouldn't necessarily get from reading a guide book. They're great storytellers and that can only add to the experience. They also have a railway, which would afford us awesome views of the landscape. I'd snap thousands of pictures on my digital camera and hope to find the one perfect picture to use for our Christmas cards.
Part of the getaway would include a road trip in a rental car because it is so much fun to explore. I would love to find an old ghost town to visit or stop byan out-of-the way museum that isn't always on tourist maps. I'd also love to look for fossils, though I don't expect to find a T Rex!
Exploring on our own at our own pace is something that is important to us because our kids are still young. Someday, I hope to cross the Grand Canyon off my bucket list of places I'd love to visit. I've seen Niagara Falls and there's so much of this great country to explore.
What's your ideal getaway for a destination in the U.S.? Where would you go and what would you do?
