Special diets rarely are cheap and going wheat-free is no exception. Not living in a metro area doesn't help me since most wheat-free foods are by nature gluten free and thus not widely available at your local supermarket. Many things are wheat-free - produce, milk, etc. but when you really crave those bread products - a nice sandwich, crackers with your soup, doughnuts - well, it gets pretty frustrating.
The thing with Amazon is that it is cheapest to buy in bulk, but you hesitate if you haven't tried something. No one wants to spend $26 on a case of something they think tastes gross! So the solution we have found is that whenever my husband travels for work, he has standing orders to go into specialty stores such as Whole Foods and seek out gluten free products he thinks I would want to eat. He brings them home and they either pass muster or don't. But for those that do, this is where Amazon comes in quite handy. I have been able to order bread mix from there that is actually quite good. We had previously tried a pre-made loaf and no amount of peanut butter or jelly heaped onto those two pieces of cardboard -er bread - made it taste good. However, Gluten Free Pantry makes a really good sandwich bread mix and it is available at Amazon, shipping free on either $25 or Prime, whichever is relevant to your purchase. Buying these products through Amazon saves us money by allowing me to buy a case cheaper than I would have been able to either buy a la carte from another place online or a la carte by having my husband pick up multiples each time he goes on a business trip. The free shipping is a bonus as well. So if you have to eat Gluten Free or have other dietary restrictions that make it near impossible to buy your special food locally, visit Amazon and see if they offer those foods. You may be surprised at the money you could save especially on items you purchase frequently. Amazon offers a 15% subscription discount also on certain food items and you can set your frequency to 1, 2, 3, or 6 months.
