Kellogg's new Gluten Free Rice Krispies: What did I think?

Kellogg's has a new Gluten Free Rice Krispies cereal on the market now - something I've wanted for years.  I wasn't able to find it locally to me, so I snagged a box at a grocery store while I was on vacation in Pennsylvania.   What did I think?

How Kellogg's Gluten Free Rice Krispies tasted...

First off, these aren't like regular Rice Krispies in that the gluten free variety is made with brown rice.  There was a slight difference in taste, but, overall, it was fairly close.  I found them slightly chewier than the regular kind too and felt the need to eat up quickly before my bowl was soggy.

But what about the Snap, Crackle, and Pop?

Anyone who eats Rice Krispies knows about the signature snap, crack, and pop that your bowl does in the first few moments after you pour the milk on top.  There was snapping, cracking, and popping, but to a lesser degree.  My bowl quit talking to me long before I finished.  However, it was nice to hear that cereal music since I'd missed it so much.

Price!

I'm hoping that it will eventually make it to my area stores and even go on sale.  The box that I got was about $5, give or take, but it wasn't a pathetically small box either since I got a standard 12 oz box.  The pricing was in line with the other Kellogg's cereals on the shelf of similar size.

State Historical Markers: Ever wished you could read the sign?

Living in the Commonwealth of Virginia in "Historyland", I see a lot of those historical markers dotting the countryside.  Sometimes it just isn't safe to stop to read the sign, or advisable (like the one for John Wilkes Booth near AP Hill - they do patrol that area!).  And sometimes you only get to read half of the sign, wishing you could have read the rest before zipping by at the speed of light.

On a lark, I searched Amazon for a book that listed the historical markers of Virginia and -- voila -- such a book exists.

I actually own this book and keep it in my car for reference.  When we are traveling somewhere in the state, we can easily look up the signs that we see on the side of the road.  It's organized into broad areas, versus county by county, so it took a bit of work at first to get a feel for how the book was organized.  It is a game now to actually find the markers so that we can check them off as having been found.  The book does give an approximate location for each sign and the text for each sign is included, so if you missed the sign or only caught part of it, you can easily look it up.

There was at least one sign that we noticed wasn't included, but that was OK.  I don't expect perfection, but it did make us feel like we'd found a hidden gem.

My experience with Amazon Warehouse Deals

A few days ago, I mentioned stumbling upon Amazon's Warehouse Deals and finding a book for half off the list price because it was a returned item.  The book was listed as "very good" and while "very good" can be a subjective term, I think I did alright considering.

I was a bit surprised, though, because when I was reading other book descriptions, they were very specific in mentioning bends in the paper back covers.  The book that I purchased didn't mention any cover bends or dings, so I wasn't expecting any.  So, I was a little disappointed it wasn't picture perfect considering how well other items were described when it pertained to cover issues.

Then, I put it into context.  This was a book for my family.  I wasn't planning to give it away as a gift, so perfection wasn't absolutely necessary.  To be painfully honest, my kids aren't ones to handle books with kid gloves.  It came with bent corners for sure, but I'm sure had it arrived picture perfect and crisp, those corners would be bent in short order.

Bottom line:  I got a good "scratch and dent" deal on a book for my family.  I saved half off because it had a little wear and tear.  It was never read (else there would have been the tell-tale crease on the spine) and it was in good condition otherwise.  I don't regret the purchase.

Amazon's Warehouse Deals: Another way to save big!

I stumbled onto Amazon's Warehouse Deals site by accident tonight and am glad I did.  Basically, it is an outlet to allow Amazon to sell open box items.  Have you ever bought an open box item?  It's a great way to save and often the item was returned because someone didn't want it or need it after they opened the box.

I purchased a book that was returned and listed in very good condition.  It was $10 off the hard cover price, so I'm hoping it looks like brand new. Items listed at Amazon's Warehouse Deals site are inspected to make sure they are working, according to their site.  With a book, however, so long as it isn't icky or ratty, I'm all for saving a buck.

Just for comparison's sake, I saw Sarah Palin's book, Going Rogue, listed in the book section of Amazon's Warehouse Deals.  They currently have two copies, both for $6.49 and both with "Small wrinkle / bend on dust cover" and one with "Small mark / wear on pages."  The list price for this book on the regular Amazon site is $17.18, so you'd save over $10 by buying the one from the Warehouse Deals.  If you click the link for used under the main entry, look for "Warehouse Deals" to see the ones that are sold and fulfilled by Amazon. 

Aside from books, they offer a range of products that are open box specials.  This could include musical instruments, computer software, video games, lap tops, etc.  Be sure to check through all the categories for something that strikes your fancy and save.  If you find something there and buy it, let me know what it was!

The book that I bought shipped free on Prime, a huge plus.  I can't wait to get it and see if it was as advertised.

Bing Rewards: Just redeemed for my first $5 Amazon GC

I signed up for Bing Rewards on 12/31/2010, mainly because I was afraid the 250 credits for signing up would disappear come New Year's.  I'm glad to say that it is still available and that if you love Amazon as much as I do, you may want to sign up and start earning your way toward Amazon gift codes too!

A $5 Amazon GC is 541 points.  The 250 you get when you first sign up puts you just about half way there.  The rest of the points I've gotten from checking the offers tab and finding things to click on that credit me with points here or there.  I have been typically finding offers of 12 points per action.  I don't always see a new offer every day though.  However, today there were two offers and that put me over the threshold for being able to claim the $5 Amazon as a reward. 

In addition, from now until 1/29, you get 1 point per search.  This adds up quickly too and though I may not search there every day, I'm still managing to accrue points easily.

You do need IE to install the Bing Bar.  I use a different browser for most of my searches and do have Bing installed on my IE and do my best to pop on to the internet through IE too.  The confirmation email stated that subject to verification, I should get my reward within a week or two.
