Sell used college textbooks back to Barnes & Noble

Did you know that Barnes & Noble bought used college textbooks back? I sure didn't. I remember the good ole days when you had to trudge your books back to the college bookstore only to be offered a paltry amount of money. If you could, it was better to sell your book to someone else who needed it next semester. Worse, the prof would use the new edition the next semester, thus sticking you with a book. Even back in the early 90s, I remember dropping a few hundred bucks on books each semester.

How it works

Similarly to Cash4Books, you type in your ISBN and if they are accepting, you will receive a quote. They even pay shipping (though they make a note that you may want to insure your books just in case and send them such that you can prove you shipped them.) You must have at least $10 worth of books to participate in this program. Once they receive your shipment, they will cut you a check.

Tips: Get a quote before you head to the college bookstore so you'll know if they are competitive or not. Also, if your college bookstore passes on your book, check B&N because another college may still be using the text and thus it is still viable to sell. Finally, check Cash4Books too to see if they are offering anything for your book.

While you are there, browse their college texts and compare prices with the college bookstore. Several years ago, we ordered my husband's Master's class text from Amazon under the Prime trial so that it would ship in 2 days and arrive in time. For us since he was a distance learner it was just more convenient instead of fighting traffic all the way to his college in the DC area. So if you are in college or know someone who is, have them check out these buyback programs and perhaps even order their texts online while they are home for the holidays. Sure beats standing in a line on the first day of class!
