No mail delivery on Saturdays? What do you think?

CNN Money reported a few months ago that the US Postal Service (USPS) was planning to ask Congress to have Saturday delivery cut to help get them back on better financial ground. Is Saturday delivery important or not? Most businesses that keep banker's hours wouldn't miss the Saturday drop, aside from picking up a stack of mail Monday morning from their mail slot. I, for one, don't disagree that dropping Saturday delivery would probably not be a hardship on residential customers. I typically don't go to the post office on a Saturday, though I could see where it would be hard for some people to make it to the post office if they were working all week.

I did ask one of my local post office workers about this when I first heard about the proposal to discontinue Saturday delivery. What that person told me was that it would probably take YEARS to get it done and that was because of the postal union. We may think Congress takes its good, old sweet time, but it seems that the postal unions here could be a sticky wicket in this mess if legislation does ultimately get proposed in 2010. This employee told me that her gut feeling as a veteran postal employee was that the union would fight the loss of Saturday delivery tooth and nail.

What do you think? Can you live without Saturday delivery of mail? Do you think it is a vital component of the economy? Would you rather give up Saturday delivery than face another stamp hike? Let me know your thoughts on this one.
